FEARLESSLY SPEAKING

Fear: A distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; to regard with distrust; doubt and uneasiness. To shrink from doing.
To paraphrase Shakespeare - Wherefore art thou fear. Hiding in the bosom of mine heart.

But fear is also one of the most powerful motivating forces in the human experience. It is the clarion call; the signals that there is something you need to change in order to live a completely fulfilled life. Honoring this feeling is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

FEARLESSLY SPEAKING is about finding your voice and learning how to speak out for what you want. It’s never too late to make the changes you want to make. So turn off the fear, self-doubt and anxiety, and turn up the confidence and start to create your best life now.

Join me Jacqueline Wales, and my guests as we walk through the celebration we call life with all its glorious challenges.

FEARLESSLY SPEAKING asks a lot of questions and while we may not have all the answers, we’ve got quite a few of them. Here’s a few ideas for starters:

  • Learn to take your experiences and use them positively to create the future you have always dreamed about.
  • Find out how making mistakes is simply the tapestry of the rich life you have created and what you can learn from them.
  • Be in tune with your passions and play a bigger game.
  • Discover new people, interesting ways to do things, and find joy in life again.

If you’re ready to change how you talk to yourself, you’re ready to change your life, and you’re ready for FEARLESSLY SPEAKING

Being Fearless is not the absence of fear but the choices and decisions
we make when it shows up in our life.

Diana S. Zimmerman

Performer, Entrepreneur, Businesswoman and Best Selling Author

Vanishing avocados, mega-million dollar conferences, haute couture jewels, and mysterious beings—are all part of Diana S. Zimmerman’s amazing life.

Like her bestselling fantasy adventure novel, “Kandide and the Secret of the Mists,” Diana’s role in the performing arts as well as the business world transcends the ordinary.
She has been a performer, entrepreneur, and businesswoman since the age of eight when she invested all of her resources into a small magic trick. With a total capital outlay of 47 cents, she parlayed her investment into a spectacular 25-year stage and television career that earned her the title "World’s Foremost Lady Magician.” Today, Diana is a corporate CEO, as well as the award-wining author of “Kandide and the Secret of the Mists”—the bestselling first book in her Calabiyau Chronicles trilogy. www.kandide.com.

Diana invented magic illusions for superstar magicians such as Lance Burton and David Copperfield, and remains a highly respected lecturer, writer, and teacher in this field. She co-sponsors the Junior Magicians’ Club—a youth group she founded in 1974 with the help of legendary actor, Cary Grant—at Hollywood’s famous Magic Castle.

Her transition into the world of corporate business saw the creation of CMS Communications, Intl.—an international Marketing Communications/Event Production agency whose clients rank among the Fortune 500. Often called the Nordstrom of the industry, CMS has been named by Successful Meetings Magazine in their “Top 50 Event Companies” for an unprecedented seven years straight.
Her dazzling road of business achievements is also paved with equally impressive journalistic credentials. Having had 100’s of articles published in the elite haute couture jewelry industry, “Kandide and the Secret of the Mists” is the first of her three fantasy adventure novels. It reached #4 on the Amazon.com bestseller list and is been endorsed by S.A.V.E (Students Against Violence Everywhere). www.nationalsave.org Book Two, “Kandide and The Lady’s Revenge,” is slated for publication April of 2009.

Diana is also the co-author of the business strategy book “Tactical Abyss” which will be released in 2009, and the definitive biography of master illusionists, Siegfried and Roy—also a 2009 release. When she isn’t busy running CMS or writing, Diana can be found speaking at schools across the country about self-esteem and anti-bullying—two topics that are near and dear to her heart, since she was bullied as a young child. It is for that reason magic became so important in her young life.

Diana starred in her own cable television show, “Enchanted Palace” as well as her own magical revue show in Lake Tahoe. She appeared on virtually every major TV talk and variety show, toured the world, and later became a much sought after corporate performer and spokesperson for companies as diverse as Ore Ida Potatoes, IBM, and the Avocado Advisory Board. She also became a successful motivational speaker. Her speech, “Success, Mastering the Art of Illusion,” garnered standing ovation after standing ovation in the corporate world.

Gayle Gregory

Gayle Gregory is one of three co-authors of “The Grand Experiment, an Expedition of Self-Discovery”, a book about seven universal myths that drive and determine beliefs, behaviors, and their resultant outcomes. The book is foundational in her work with individuals and corporations, since it speaks directly to the reason why things fail to change regardless of the effort applied.

Gayle is a former senior manager with two Fortune 500 companies, United Parcel Service and Household Financial, where she had over-sight for an operations staff of 535, and technology start-ups and project management, respectively. While at UPS she coordinated several change initiatives that saved the organization $10M annually. Gayle was also later assigned to corporate to facilitate enterprise-wide change throughout the organization. As one of her start-up projects with Household, she brought a 100 seat call center on line from scratch, in 30 days.

Gregory founded Pure Possibility, a coaching and mentoring program that works with individuals desiring to change old patterns and break free of limitations, and within the Oregon state corrections system, where she conducts meditation and thought awareness training for men in the state’s medium security prison. Gayle specializes in the deconstruction phase of WE’s unique three phase consulting process. As she says, “You can’t create the new until you have dismantled the old otherwise you are building on top of shaky ground that will swallow up all your good work.”

While working at UPS and traveling five days a week, Gayle finished her BA in Management, an accomplishment that she laughingly states took 28 years from its inception. She graduated with honors right before taking a two-year sabbatical with her husband, where she sailed to Vancouver Island and from there to Mexico aboard her 40 foot sailboat. The adventure was amazing and provided the insights that were the groundwork for the seven myths.

Alice March

The Attention Factor

Alice Aspen March founded the non-profit organization, FACT, (Focusing Awareness on Children and Television); as Executive Director, she played the key role in keeping Mr. Rogers Neighborhood on PBS and exchanged programming ideas with Fred Rogers. Alice commissioned a play for the Los Angeles School District, which educated audiences about symptoms of heavy TV viewing: i.e. obesity, depression, high-school drop out, teen-age pregnancy, suicide, violence, poor reading skills, climbing illiteracy.

She created and produced the Emmy nominated documentary, Latch-Key Kids, narrated by Christopher Reeve; this show led to the development of extended after-school programs funded by The California State Senate which subsequently appointed Alice twice to State Commissions. NATPE (National Association of Television Program Executives) recognized her expertise, when they asked her to speak at their national convention for 2000 attendees in Las Vegas.

Today Alice, a Humanist, is now known for her innovative work in the field of Attention after discovering her third son was abusing drugs. She determined to look for her role in his self-destructive behavior and after two years of research created "The Attention Factor" which she credits for saving Jonathan's life.
Alice says attention is a problem, but it is also the solution and she continues to present her work around the world.

Jacqueline welcomes Lisa Saunders

Lisa Saunders,
currently a fulltime writer for the State University of New York at Rockland, was thrilled to be expecting a child on Christmas Eve in 1989—exactly one year after her miscarriage. But the moment Lisa first laid eyes on Elizabeth, she was afraid—her head was very small and deformed. The doctor said to her: “If Elizabeth lives, she will never roll over, sit up, or feed herself.” It was determined that Lisa caught the #1 viral cause of birth defects while she was pregnant—cytomegalovirus, known as CMV. Lisa was shocked that her OB/GYNs had never warned her about CMV and how to prevent contracting it. She had unknowingly put Elizabeth’s development at risk by running a daycare center in her home and sharing cookies with her toddler.

Lisa, along with her husband, Jim, and first daughter, Jackie, spent the next 16 years raising a little girl who needed to be fed, carried and clothed. Despite the cerebral palsy and severe mental disabilities that made Elizabeth unable to speak or move, she loved being held, going on long car rides and attending her special ed school where she received daily therapy and compassionate care. When she was 11, a big, homeless dog named Riley joined the family. He became Elizabeth’s devoted companion, snoozing beside her for hours on the couch, and at times, laying across her feet to keep them warm.

By Elizabeth’s 16th birthday, Elizabeth had survived several bouts of pneumonia, seizures and major surgeries. Weighing only 50 pounds, she looked odd to strangers, but her cheerful, soul-capturing smile made her lovely to her family. Two months later, she died suddenly during a seizure. While holding her body in the hospital, Jim looked down into his daughter’s lifeless eyes and cried, “No one is ever going to look at me again the way Elizabeth did.”

In an effort to prevent other parents from making this same cry, and as a way to handle her grief, Lisa now makes it her mission to tell the world about congenital CMV prevention until doctors make it part of their standard of care. As a result of an article she wrote about congenital CMV, she was invited to be the parent representative of the newly formed Congenital CMV Foundation, to speak at the international 2008 Congenital CMV Convention at the CDC in Atlanta, and to write a book about her experiences, which she entitled, “Anything But a Dog! The perfect pet for a girl with congenital CMV.”

Susan Swartz

The media and, let's face it, our culture are not always sure what to make of women over 50, the Boomer-and-beyond women, the ones I call JUICY TOMATOES. Women who are lush and still on the vine and have plenty more to say and do. Who doesn’t want to be a juicy tomato in their 50’s?

My guest this week is Susan Swartz a California journalist, author and public radio commentator. She’s been writing about women since she reported on consciousness raising groups and covered a rising star in the women’s movement named Gloria Steinem. She is the author of two books on women over 50. “Juicy Tomatoes: Plain Truths, Dumb Lies and Sisterly Advice for Women Over 50” (published in 2000 by New Harbinger,Oakland) and translated into six languages. And “The Juicy Tomatoes Guide to Ripe Living After 50” (2006, New Harbinger) translated into two languages.

Living in the San Francisco Bay Area gives Susan a good place to report on outspoken women and Boomer angst which she did for twenty years in her award-winning column for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and the New York Times News Service.

I’ve always said that being a journalist made me a better feminist. And being a feminist made me a better journalist. Because both insist that you keep your eyes open, challenge stereotypes and ask “what’s this about?”

She is also co-writer of the Play “Juicy Tomatoes,” a theater performance and a public radio commentator in Northern California with an upcoming series of “Juicy Tomatoes” radio shorts to be distributed nationally.

Jacqueline with Sandra Levitin

Kalon Women

Sandra Levitin is the President/Editor of Kalon Women, an online magazine for women forty plus. She has been writing since she could hold a crayon, growing to love the feel of a pencil in her hand and the sound it makes when connecting to paper. She is a published poet, working on two manuscripts and a children’s book with her 10 year old granddaughter.

Her life has always framed itself around helping people. A devoted mother and grandmother, she calls herself the “fix it lady” because everyone, including her children’s friends have always come to her to “fix it”. It followed her on into the corporate world as she excelled in sales, sales management and sales training for several national and international companies. She joined her new husband in 2002 as the General Manager of his real estate business, contributing her knowledge and experience to the 800 realtors under their brokerage. Although she enjoyed the challenges, there was still something missing.

After making a tough decision (with her husband’s loving guidance and a firm kick to the booty), Sandra decided to leave the corporate environment and fulfill a 15 year dream that started with a friend who died from breast cancer before they could see it through together. Sandra and a few of her friends also began talking about what direction they each wanted their lives to take. Kalon Women was born as a way for us to reach out to other women sharing similar journeys to share our professional and life experiences, enriching one another along the way all with a touch of humor, which Sandra says is so important because as women, we forget how to laugh and play.

Kalon Women’s vision is to be a powerful voice for all women 40+ as we face challenges unique to our generation. The mission of Kalon Women is to provide answers and raise awareness of issues and causes that affect us,! so that our generation of women will be stronger from knowledge gained, and the generation of women who follow in our path will hopefully find it less rocky. The articles, stories, poetry and other written expressions in Kalon Women are created by real women 40+. Written to inspire, help and perhaps provide a few laughs to all "women of a certain age".

Retirement? Sandra has discovered that women do not retire in the traditional sense. Instead, she feels that we look for new challenges and then reinvent ourselves to meet them. It is then up to us, to reveal new meanings and truths to hold our attention and to grasp the true meaning of Kalon within ourselves.

Jacqueline Wales with Judy Gruen

Judy Gruen is the author of 3 award-winning humor books, including The Women's Daily Irony Supplement, which was named ForeWord Magazine's best humor book of the year in 2008. A quote from this book also appeared on 5 million Starbucks cups, which raised Judy's coolness quotient in the eyes of her teenaged children, at least for about 5 minutes.

Her humor and essays have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Ladies' Home Journal, Woman's Day, the Los Angeles Times, Christian Science Monitor, Jewish Journal of Los Angeles, and many other media outlets. Her humorous podcast, "Just Off My Noodle," is available through iTunes and www.OU.org. Judy also writes about Jewish spirituality for several media outlets, including ReadTheSpirit.com.

She is trying desperately to catch up with emerging technology, but still needs her kids to help her get photos off the digital camera, reprogram the temperature in the freezer, and enter new contact numbers on her cell phone. She is also not that concerned with global warming or claims of the disappearing ozone levels. She is, however, mightily concerned about rising cellulite levels and eroding collagen levels. Her fondest hopes are that one day scientists will discover a real cure for the middle-aged chin wattle, and that a literary reviewer will refer to her work as "trenchant."

Jacqueline welcomes Judy Briggs

In 1993, Judy Briggs, divorced with 4 young boys, realized she had two choices: bleed the system and claim defeat; or get out there and work to survive.

Like her single mother did before her, Judy worked full time and found ways to make very little money go as far as it could. Failure was not an option for Judy and she continues to live by that motto today.

She eventually saved enough money and in 2003 she bought a 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise, a residential and commercial junk removal service. For the first year Judy did everything from driving a truck and lifting tons of junk to dealing with the managerial aspects of her business. (Judy’s work hard philosophy also applied to how she raised her boys and how they are treated as her employees.)

Judy’s business quickly rose to the top among her 1-800-GOT-JUNK? peers and she became one of the few to join the ‘Millionaire’s Club’ (regarding revenue). Judy is always looking for ways to improve her company and she now recycles and donates 90% of everything she collects, which is much more than most 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchises are able to recycle.

But Judy is more than just business. Her list of charity work is longer than a Fenway Frank:

* She’s run the Boston Marathon three times to raise money for a charity that helps children with severe mental disabilities.
* She organizes several toy drives every year for Cradles to Crayons, which helps children living below the poverty line.
* She also donates household goods to family relief services to furnish apartments for underprivileged people.
* Judy belongs to several women’s business and networking groups where she often coaches women to overcome fear and realize their goals.

Judy’s message for other middle-aged women is that they don’t have to remain in the economic class they find themselves in. They don’t need education to prove they are smart. They don’t need to stick to the typical role for women. They really can be more as long as they have the passion and the drive, they’ll achieve it.

Caron Ellis and her mother, Lyn Schwartz.

Caron describes herself as someone who lives to learn. Her career has spanned several incarnations including newspaper editor, management consultant, hairdresser, freelance writer, teacher and now, entrepreneur. Caron says the glue that has held everything together is her ability to communicate, a skill she learned from her mother.

Lyn is descended from a family of pioneer women who had a strong spirit and ability to survive. Lyn’s mother traveled from Poland to America by steerage , but was widowed young leaving her to raise her family alone during the Great Depression. Her courage in keeping the family together inspired Lynn when she had her own family to take care of.

When economic challenges arose, Lyn went to work and like many women, struggled with trying to balance work and child care, and eventually went on to become editor of Photo Marketing Magazine and later headed up the New York office of the Photo Marketing Association. Caron remembers her mother’s care, not the struggles she had to keep it all together, and credits her for passing on that indomitable spirit that has kept the family going through the generations.

Caron is Founder, President and Communication Maven of 3D Radio™ "“A TiVo for the radio" with her husband Mike, who she describes as the genius in the family. The ability to speak up for what you are and what you want is the gift she inherited as she carries on communicating with power and purpose.

This week's guests are Kate Casey and her mom Suzanne Casey

When I was putting out the idea that I wanted guests for this particular topic, Kate wrote me and said she had an amazing mother and wanted to share her with the world. As an inspiration in her daughter’s life, Suzanne considers herself a true feminist, and holds true to the values that strong women can change the world. She herself has changed her world several times in this lifetime. As a child she dreamed of becoming a doctor, and studied microbiology. She eventually became a respiratory therapist. But like many women in this era, the demands of raising a family took her away from her first love into several other areas including the Census bureau, a dressmaker, a gourmet chocolate business owner, and a sous chef with a French/American restaurant. But her dream of becoming a doctor never died and today she has turned her dream into being a registered nurse. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa at age 61 from her nursing program. As if that were not enough, Suzanne dreams of joining Doctors Without Borders one day. I have no doubt she will.

Kate Casey’s love for her mother and respect for her values has been channeled into the political world. Growing up, she was intensely interested in world affairs, and following in her mother’s footsteps, fought for equal rights. She attended Trinity College, an all-women’s school, and eventually went on to work in Washington. She had the pleasure of speaking with Al Gore and President Clinton while she was there which made her mother very proud. After six years, she was burned out on politics although still working for senators as a public relations expert. At 31, Kate now owns a PR firm and puts her energy into helping others

This week's guests are Britt Menzies & Merrily Ansell

This month on Fearlessly Speaking we are doing something completely different. It’s Mothers and Daughters month and I’ll be showcasing powerful mother/daughter relationships that are truly changing the world.

This week’s guests are Britt Menzies, founder of Stinky Kids, a children’s clothing brand that teaches kids about values, and her mother Merrily Ansell, founder of Books, Bears and Bonnets, a company that donates whimsical gift boxes to bring smiles to children and adults fighting cancer.

StinkyKids began as a simple request to paint a picture of a ballerina for Britt’s two and a half year old daughter that eventually grew to 10 unique and inspiring characters who share the philosophy of being a little stinker. It’s message ‘doing good and making positive choices’ celebrates the innocence and joys of childhood. It’s also an interactive website dedicated to creating meaningful activities for children from writing to their favorite characters, to printing coloring pages, and meeting all 10 diverse StinkyKids characters. In a world where so many things are complicated, when you get happy from simple, you gravitate to simple. People are gravitating to StinkyKids!!

Britt was inspired by her mother’s journey to reinvent herself when she changed from being a financial planner for American Express to creating a company that spreads joy around the world. “While I was creating my new company called StinkyKids, I began to appreciate my mom, Merrily, more than as a great mom, but as a fellow business woman. After her sister Emily died from uterine cancer, my mom decided to leave the corporate world and form a non-profit in her honor (booksbearsbonnets.org) which delivers gift boxes to cancer patients.”

The StinkyKids motto: “Always Be a Leader of Good” is a concept that we created to teach our children to make right choices, not to follow bad behavior, but be a leader of good behavior. It made sense for the StinkyKids to spread this message, as it is so important to be good to people, make right choices and give back to our community. Now, these ten ‘little stinKers’ are role models to kids of all ages in social awareness and the importance of thinking of others and doing the right thing.

This week's guest is Linda Rivero

Linda Rivero is a world traveler and founder of a sensational company called Peace Through Travel.

Linda uses her experiences as a global nomad and ambassador for Peace to educate, inform and inspire women travelers to see the world through a new lens of cultural authentic and mindful attention to travel. She not only creates life-changing travel experiences based on meaningful, cross-cultural interaction; she also gives travelers the tools to explore their world with a deepened compassion and love for our planet and all who live in it.

She creates travel opportunities for women from industrialized countries to work with their sisters in developing countries, supporting grassroots efforts to increase their economic and social empowerment. This travel experience emphasizes not charity, but rather the support, learning and personal growth enjoyed by both groups.

Born into a multi-national and multi-lingual family Linda says she was soaked in the trill of Spanish and squealing with delight in Italian well before she absorbed left-brain-based English. She was a miniature citizen of the world by the time she entered pre-school. This love of language including Yiddish only underscored her developing psychological imperative to devote herself to connecting people and places that are ostensibly disparate but essentially united.

She has traveled extensively and lived in Latin America and Europe as well as various regions of the United States. Language and communication have always been her beacons. Linda speaks at six languages and has taught language to such clients as Marriott International, Iberoamerican Network for Sustainable Development, and Get Up and Go! Travel Guides.

Ten years of directing her international, specialized tour company, La Pergola Tours/Italian Country living, taught her the business of sustainable travel with a cultural emphasis…and eight years’ photographing New York City-based performers and exhibiting independent and foreign films through her not-for-profit North of New York Cinema Center sharpened her eye—and need—for beauty. For Linda, education is on-going. Learning is an unending process—and gift. To learn more about Linda and her work, feel free to visit www.peacethroughtravel.net.

Jacqueline will join with Linda as she shares with us the benefits of inter-cultural communication, language training, and how to make the most of our international travels. As a global nomad, Jacqueline enjoys the tales from the trails aspect of life, so look forward to a lively show.

This week's guest is Lisa Fredette

Lisa Fredette knows firsthand why it's important to put the emotional baggage of your divorce behind you so you can begin designing the future of your choice. After making her own choices about a marriage that was no longer working for her, Lisa began working with women who were going through the divorce recovery process and began helping them to consciously take steps to heal the wounds. As Lisa says, building a strong foundation for your life is essential if you are to attract a healthier, more supportive relationship in the future.

This week's guest is Sheryl Entwistle

Sheryl Entwistle has been described as Fearlessly Feminine and has fearlessly embraced many adventures in her life including fire walking, bungee jumping and changing careers late in life. But four years ago she took a big leap when she transferred her life from corporate America to creatively telling the stories of people's lives. Sheryl realized that many people told her many fascinating life stories, but there was one drawback. She was at funerals when they were being told! She knew there had to be a way to celebrate their life while living, and thus Living Celebrations was born.

Join me and Sheryl this Sunday as we discuss the power of change and the beauty of creating extraordinary art pieces that celebrate a life well lived.
