PBS Barbecue America host Rick Browne cooks with us!

Many years ago when I was a morning show host in the Pacific Northwest, I was sent some information on a guy who wrote a beautiful book about barbecuing. Now many people say there’s no point in doing a show on food over the radio. After all… who can see it? I beg to differ. Over the years we have featured, among others, Stuart Anderson grilling a steak on the show and Len Vohs cooking burgers and veggies on a Wolfgang Puck Grill.

And then there was Rick Browne… giving us the lowdown on barbecue and teaching us a thing or two about grilling… at the launch of his first book at the Barnes and Noble in Vancouver, Washington.

Fast-forward a decade or so, and Rick Browne is now the host of a popular PBS program and the author of several beautiful books on BBQ (and why not? He was a photographer early in his career) and I have the opportunity to interview Rick again for the show. You BET I’m going to jump on it!

I hope you’ll join us – just in time for the Independence Day Holiday - for some great recipes, stories and tips with Rick Browne…this week on A Closer Look with Pam Atherton.

I just got an email from the General Manager of our local mall. She wrote about how her company had gone into Chapter 11, and took 158 other mall properties with it. They are restructuring… but it’s still a tense time. Even though business will continue as usual, she knows that people will be calling, rumors will be started, and her life will get much more stressful.

When the economy is down, stress and worry can cause physical and mental exhaustion. Maintaining your energy in times of stress is crucial because when your energy level goes down, your mood goes with it. Dr. Patricia Gerbarg joins us next week to discuss low-cost, effective methods to improve energy, mood, productivity, and stress-resilience. She will share the best ways to combine herbs, nutrients, and Breath-Body-Mind practices to support yourself, your family, and your friends through challenging times.

An Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College, Dr. Gerbarg is also the co-author of How to Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, she has practiced psychiatry in Kingston, NY since 1983.

Grief Recovery Expert Russell Friedman talks about overcoming loss in our lives.

Did you know that there are more than 40 events that can create the range of human emotions called grief? For example, death of a loved one [or less than loved one], divorce, estrangements, financial changes and health issues. Those are the big ones that head the list. Whether the loss was recent or long ago, it may still be limiting your ability to participate fully in life.

Russell Friedman, the author of The Grief Recovery Handbook, gives us insight into why it is so important to grieve… why nothing is too insignificant to grieve over… and how grief is a normal and natural emotional reaction to loss. If you, or someone you know, is dealing with a loss of some kind, and wants to retake a productive place in the mainstream of their lives, then this is the interview you cannot miss.

I hope you’ll join us for the discussion. Tune in Thursday at 1pm PT/4pm ET for A Closer Look with Russell Friedman.

with wealth, fame, power & perfection? Jim Rubens guests!

Why are one in four of us addicted to at least one substance or behavior? Why are 80 percent of women unhappy with their bodies? Why is America drowning in record personal and public debt?

Jim Rubens says it’s an epidemic of status defeat and he says we’re locked into an unwinnable race for success. His book, OverSuccess, draws from emerging science and insights about our transformed social lives and tells us why our genes, commercial culture and global hypercompetition have made us depressed and feeling unfulfilled. It’s our obsession with success and public visibility.

Selling to Zebras - Good Ideas for ANY Economy! Chad Koser Guests

Just when you think we are starting to turn the corner when it comes to the economy, we find out that AIG has been paying out millions of our tax dollars in bonuses to employees who just took the money and ran.

It would be nice to just rant and rave about it. We're angry, doggone it, and we want things to change!

With the economy being the way it is today, learning to risk is more important than ever. We don’t have the luxury of just waiting things out and hoping for the best. We have to dig down, realize our fears, and work through them.

Yeah. You’re talking to the original Risk-Aversion Queen. Risk? I don’t think so. Things change.” That’s what Jim says, and I would like to believe him.

So we’re going to grill this 5-time sky-diving world champ about things such as actual risk versus perceived risk, identifying the opportunity, discovering your passions and determining whether your fears and valid or invalid.

The International Year of Astronomy – Quantum Physicist Mani Bhaumik talks God, the Cosmos and the Excimer Laser

Do you love star-gazing? No, I don’t mean watching the red carpet shows and reading TMZ online. 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy! And our favorite quantum physicist, Dr. Mani Bhaumik, is the Patron of the project. His book, The Cosmic Detective, has been chosen as the official book by the IYA for their year long celebration.

Now lest you think that astronomy and physics are but one step away from Ambien, let me assure you that Dr. Bhaumik is anything BUT boring! Growing up in abject poverty during the independence movement in India, Bhaumik barely survived. As a young man, he served Gandhi. He found his way to America and co-created the Excimer Laser, which has given hundreds of thousands of people new eyesight. He lived the high life and was featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. He dated Eva Gabor.

And then one day he woke up and decided there was something more to life. He went on a search for God, through the eyes of a scientist. His book Code Name God became a hit. He went on to become the creator and Executive Producer of a children's animation

series, Cosmic Quantum Ray, which airs on Dish Network's Anamania HD, and teaches and entertains children about science.

And then there’s the Mani Bhaumik Award, for advancing the understanding of the brain and conscious mind in healing, which will be presented at UCLA on March 18th to an esteemed recipient.

Yes, Mani Bhaumik is one-of-a-kind. And you'll fall in love with him, too! Mark your calendar for Thursday at 1pm PT/4pm ET for a closer look at Quantum Physics and Dr. Mani Bhaumik on A Closer Look with Pam Atherton.

People say “It’s all in your mind.” Mary T. Browne says… “You're RIGHT!”

You choose your life by choosing your thoughts

What a concept! Mary T. Browne says that people don’t think about their thoughts – where they come from or how they’re created. She says we sometimes don’t understand that our lives, health, finances, love, work, and happiness are completely dependent upon our thoughts and the actions that result from them.

That’s where The 5 Rules of Thought come in. It's Mary's new book about the power of the mind. This week on the show, we’ll talk with Mary about redirecting emotions, about thought vibrations and colors, and toxic words and thoughts and how they affect us. Plus, why chaotic thinking lacks energy and produces thought forms that are not clearly defined.

If you want your life to go in a different direction, if you want more fulfillment, if you want love, better relationships, less chaos in your life, then don’t miss this show with Mary T. Browne! Mark your calendar for this Thursday at 1pm PT/4pm ET for a closer look at The 5 Rules of Thought with Mary T. Browne on A Closer Look with Pam Atherton

All we are saying… is Give Peace a Deadline! Nathan Otto tells us how.

There is a yearning in most of us to have peace in this world. When our sons and daughters are dying in military action… when we hear of the deaths of civilians in countries at war… when children are turned into soldiers and women are raped and killed in the name of revolution…our hearts cry out for peace.

In the sixties, we marched. Hundreds of thousands of us marched on campuses, at the capitol, in the hot sun and in the rain. Remember this line from the Buffalo Springfield song For What It’s Worth… “What a field day for the heat… a thousand people in the street… singing songs and carrying signs”… (watch a great YouTube video of the song here) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fufkDpR40g4

We tried. But despite our best efforts, the world wasn’t willing to Give Peace a Chance. (see video of the Montreal Bed-In with John Lennon and friends) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-NRriHlLUk

Nathan Otto says that enough is enough. If we really want peace, we need to treat that goal as we would a business goal. There has to be a plan and results that can be measured. That’s why he and co-author Amber Lupton started a movement: P5Y. Peace in 5 years. Check out the website: www.P5Y.org The kick-off for the peace deadline movement was February 14th of this year. This week we’ll talk with Nathan and find out why he decided to create this deadline, what plans he has to move it forward, and what we can do to help make peace a reality.

Please join us for this important show. Mark your calendar for this Thursday at 1pm PT/4pm ET for a closer look at Giving Peace a Deadline with Nathan Otto on A Closer Look with Pam Atherton.

Abraham Lincoln's 200th Birthday!

It seems there’s a celebration just about everywhere for the 200th birthday of our 16th President. So we’re going to celebrate, too, on A Closer Look! We’ve gathered two of the foremost scholars on Lincoln and on the Civil War to be our guests on the show.

Dr. Don Elder has written three books about the civil war and is often brought in to analyze and critique books written about that time period. A professor of history at Eastern New Mexico University, Doc will explain why we really got into the Civil War, what kind of a president Lincoln was, and how we don’t seem to learn from history.

James L. Swanson shares Lincoln’s birthday and became obsessed with the President at the age of 10. He has one of the largest collections of Lincoln memorabilia and is the author of the New York Times bestseller, “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer.” Swanson will share with us the inside story to Lincoln’s assassination. Did you know it was a conspiracy? And that originally Lincoln was only supposed to be kidnapped? Swanson is full of fascinating tidbits of history and introduces us to some of the most colorful characters in American history.

Ken Price of The Palmer House Hotel

I’ve always called February the “Love Month” because Valentine’s Day is smack in the middle, and the whole month is recognized as American Heart Month. And what better thing to do than have a show on which you talk about something, and someone, you love.

Chicago is one of my greatest loves. It is a city of art and culture and history and fabulous events and people. And the home of the historic and breathtaking Palmer House Hotel. There are many fine hotels in Chicago, but I believe that the Palmer House is the finest. I make that distinction because of the people who work there. They are courteous, attentive, upbeat and genuinely helpful. Hospitality at its finest.

One of my favorite people in the whole world is Ken Price. He is the Director of Public Relations at the Palmer House and quite a dashing and debonair fellow. With a great love of cabaret music, a keen knowledge of history, and a gallant manner that charms everyone he meets, Ken is a fascinating storyteller and a generous host.

We spent some time at the Palmer House recently and chatted with Ken about the $170 million restoration/renovation of the hotel, and about Bertha Palmer, the intriguing wife of hotel builder Potter Palmer. Bertha was a pioneer in women’s rights, and the arts patron who brought the works of Monet, Degas and other impressionist artists to America.

A fan of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine,) Dr. Brown has over 200 speaking engagements on the subject every year and provides free courses for Ground Zero workers and survivors of the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. He’ll be on the show next week to give us insight into natural ways of dealing with mental and emotional problems.

There’s no way we will be able to cover all that ground… but you know we’re gonna try! Hope you’ll join us next week on A Closer Look when we talk with Psychiatrist Dr. Richard Brown. Please consider being part of the conversation. With such a great resource at our fingertips, why not let Dr. Brown answer some questions for YOU?

Surviving the Holidays 101

When you think of the holidays, what comes to mind: Turkey, smiling relatives and good cheer? Or stress, late guests and kids running around kicking and screaming?

For a lot of people it’s the second scenario, which accounts for much of the stress during the holiday season. But how can the holidays be less stressful and even downright fun? Manners and patience. That's why we've invited Barbara Ross, founder of a publishing company dedicated to educating the world in manners.

On the second half of the show, with advice on how to deal with churlish children and rude relatives, Dr. Susan will help us prepare for what should be the happiest time of the year.

Georgia Durante

You know how it is… sometimes you meet someone and you just know they are special. That’s how I felt about Georgia Durante. She had just finished writing her book, The Company She Keeps, about ten years ago and I snagged her for an interview. We immediately connected and the interview has remained one of my favorites.

Throughout the years I have interviewed Georgia many more times. She even came to this part of New Mexico to talk about domestic violence. She talked to women in shelters, kids at alternative schools, men and women at the Air Force Base. She connected to so many with her story. And her story is a dramatic one to tell: One of rape, violence, fear… and finally success and joy.

I hope you’ll make time on Thursday to tune in and hear Georgia’s story. Her book has just been brought back out in paperback and it’s a roller coaster of a read. The best part of interviewing Georgia, I think, is the fact that women will email and write after the show, talking about how the story connected with them and how inspirational Georgia is.

Walter T. Shaw

Considered the world's most notorious jewel thief

Walter T. Shaw is considered the world’s most notorious (former) jewel thief. His long-awaited memoir, A License To Stealm, chronicles the saga of his father, probably one of the most important inventors of our time, who was ripped off by corporate America and the mafia, and how this drove Walter himself to become one of the country’s most famous jewel thieves, having taken an estimated $70 million from the rich and famous from Long Island to Florida. In the forward by Frank Vincent (Phil Leotardo in The Sopranos) writes, “Full of love, fear, violence, hate and the quest for redemption, this book is an unbelievable journey through life.”

A License To Steal, Shaw Jr. maintains that it should have been his father who became famous. Although Shaw Sr. died penniless, he invented and patented several telephonic breakthroughs including the speakerphone, conference calling, call-forwarding and even the “Red Phone” used by the Eisenhower White House to contact the Kremlin. However, as a systems engineer for Bell, the most powerful monopoly of that time, he was stopped from marketing his inventions.

Walter’s revenge on the rich and famous soon began
